This route enables you to cover some of the territory that during the Middle Ages made up part of the old county of Empúries, such as the castros ('castle' in Latin) of Bellcaire d'Empordà, La Tallada and Verges. The disagreements between the Count of Empúries and the Catalan crown, to which the royal town of Torroella de Montgrí belonged, meant that the territory underwent considerable changes thanks to the political and military strategies of each side. In 1302, the northern branch of the River Ter was annulled, which meant that the king's lands flooded more often, and over time, the port of Torroella, at the estuary of the Ter, disappeared due to an accumulation of sediments.
